Shared Services Program on Justice Courts.

"Justice Courts and Justice in Ulster County: Achievements, Challenges and Opportunities"

This FREE event, open to all, will give you insights into the important role local courts play in our society (e.g. this is the only court most people ever interact with) and how they might be run more efficiently in these lean times without compromising justice.

All the key players are represented. Speakers include Holley Carnright, District Attorney; Andrew Kossover, Public Defender; Paul Van Blarcum, Ulster County Sheriff; and several town justices including Justice Tim Cox (Town of Olive), head of the magistrates association.

After a light breakfast, the program will begin with a presentation of "Shared Municipal Services Study Report on Justice Courts" by its author Professor Sydney Cresswell of SUNY Albany's Intergovernmental Studies Program. It is part of a larger study for Ulster County and town governments on the potential for intergovernmental collaboration in our communities.

Our League is co-sponsoring with CRREO at SUNY New Paltz and the Ulster County Bar Association, and our Shared Services study committee and many board members will be there. We'd love to see you there too!

Interested? RSVP as soon as possible (they need a head count for refreshments and printed materials) to Joanne Bernardo at (845) 257-2901 or at bernardj@newpaltz.edu.

NOTE: You may want to take a look at the Shared Municipal Services Study Report on Justice Courts published for Ulster County by Pattern for Progress. Go to the Ulster County website at its Municipal Resources page.

Helping Municipalities Reduce Energy Usage, Emissions, and Costs..

In this workshop aimed primarily at municipal officials and the environmental advisors and advocates who work with them, experts will provide an overview of energy conservation and alternative energy initiatives and funding strategies. Assemblyman Kevin Cahill, Chair of the NY Assembly Energy Committee, will be the kick-off speaker.

This program is NOT for professionals only. As taxpayers and interested citizens, you'll want to know what your government representatives and their advisers are supposed to know about energy options. It's your money they spend!

Please go to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/K97DXYP to register. The event is free, however tax-deductable donations are welcome; checks should be made payable to League of Women Voters Education Fund.

    Fiscal Crisis Meets Political Turmoil.
Are the famously "dysfunctional" legislature and the "accidental" governor any better positioned this year to meet the extraordinary challenges the state currently faces as it writes the 2009-10 budget?

Jay Gallagher, chief of the Gannett News Service's Albany bureau, and Barbara Bartoletti, legislative director of the LWV of New York State, have both followed NY politics for twenty-plus years, so they are the perfect duo to explain what's happening with the STATE BUDGET as the April 1st deadline for passage draws near - and what you might still be able to do about it. There will be time for audience questions.

Special thanks to our media sponsor, the Poughkeepsie Journal.

DIRECTIONS: Heading east on Church St. (Rt 44/55) from the Mid-Hudson Bridge, continue about 5 blocks and turn RIGHT onto S. Clinton which ends at Hooker. Turn LEFT onto Hooker and continue about 10 blocks. Immediately after the Meeting House (on the right) turn RIGHT onto Whittier Blvd to reach its parking lot.

Has your candidate earned your vote? Not sure who to vote for? Ask yourself the following questions.

    • What is the quality of their interactions with other candidates, with the public and with the moderator?
    • Do they answer questions directly or do the speak 'around' the topic?
    • Do they work within the framework of the event or do they take the time of other candidates for themselves, thereby limiting citizens' right to hear from everyone?
